Duinrell: a half-term hot spot
Ask any child what they like best thing about being at school and they are likely to reply “the holidays!” Ask any parent what they like least about their children’s school days and they might very possibly reply with the same answer. But the school holidays can be fun for all the family.
With October half-term descending upon many families in England, Wales and Scotland, the challenge of keeping the children entertained presents itself again. But this time of year should definitely not be overlooked for planning a getaway. It can be a great time to travel – prices are lower, the weather is still mild and a holiday can break up the sometimes drab British autumn and winter season.
A real half-term favourite with Canvas holidaymakers is Holland campsite Duinrell located a short walk from the pretty village of Wassenaar, and only 20 miles from Amsterdam. Duinrell is also quick and easy to get to, just 25 miles from Schiphol airport and 40 miles from Rotterdam ferry port, so if you only have time for a shorter break it’s the ideal destination for a family holiday.
On-site theme park
The free campsite theme park, open all season, is a real coup. At 1,184m long and 50ft high, the family dragonfly will propel you through through the trees at a giddy pace. More thrills can be found hurtling down the Aqua Shute, or if heights are not your thing the bumper boats could instil a bit of friendly competition among the family.
If the weather is not on your side, it won’t mean your holiday is a wash-out. At Duinrell, you have the “largest covered water slide paradise in the Benelux” on your doorstep. And it’s tropical! Older kids will be desperate to brave the Cycloon, Cannon Ball or Blits and Flits, while tots will enjoy a gentler pace in the children’s pool.
Sightseeing in Amsterdam
The cultural opportunities in Amsterdam are endless, making it a perfect place for a family day trip. The city also has a lot to offer in the way of family entertainment. Ann Frank’s House draws visitors from all over the world and is a poignant way to bring the children’s history lessons to life. Canal cruises are a memorable way to take in the sites, while animal lovers can enjoy a trip to Artis Royal Zoo.
