How to ski in summer
Are you yearning for a bit of on-piste action? You don’t need to wait for the next ski season – try a spot of glacier skiing to keep up your slope skills during your European summer holiday.
Here’s where you can combine Canvas camping with summer skiing:
- Les Deux Alpes, Isère, France
Just over a two-hour drive from the campsites at Lake Annecy, Camping la Serraz and Camping l’Idéal, is the popular French Alps ski resort of Les Deux Alpes. The resort is great for skiers of all standards but particularly beginners or families.
The resort’s lively atmosphere may not appeal to everyone but as home to one of Europe’s largest glaciers, this ski centre offers a vibrant summer skiing scene.
- Dachstein, Styria, Austria
Dachstein is one of the most visited regions in Austria’s Styria province (where you’ll also find the Bella Austria campsite). This alpine glacier is considered a paradise for skiers, snowboarders, hikers and nature lovers. Skiing opportunities are weather dependent during the summer so skiers are advised to check up-to-date information with this resort.
Those in search of extreme thrills may wish to try the resort’s new Sky Walk – a 1,200ft bridge over the glacier. The panoramic views are simply breathtaking if you’ve the courage to venture up and take a look.
- Kaprun, Zell am See, Austria
A two-hour drive away from Bella Austria, you’ll also find Kaprun, which boasts a large year-round ski area offering varied runs and jumps, perfect for intermediate skiers and snowboarders too.
Non skiers will also find plenty to amuse themselves in the Ice Arena where you can experience slides, a snow beach and a bar made of ice – a truly novel experience in the summer months!
- Hintertux, Tyrol, Austria
The Hintertux Glacier is located in Zillertal, Tyrol in Western Austria. Skiers or snowboarders can take to the slopes 365 days a year at heights of up to 3,250m above sea level.
If not all the family enjoy hurtling down mountains at speed, then a trip to view some magical stalactites or ice crystals in the Nature’s Ice Palace offers a magical alternative, or for a warmer experience you can take in stunning views of the region on the Panorama Terrace.
Canvas Holidays’ Bella Austria campsite is around a four-hour drive away so a weekend at Hintertux could make a fun addition to an Austrian camping holiday.
- Saas-Fee, Valais, Switzerland
Set among the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps, the Saas-Fee resort provides summer skiing opportunities on its Allalin Glacier between late July and late September (though do check with the resort before planning a trip).
Intermediate skiers and freestylers will not be disappointed by a 20km area to do their thing on, among a stunning setting in this unspoilt part of the world.
You can reach Saas-Fee in approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes by car from Camping Manor Farm, Interlaken.
