Spotlight on lakes & mountains

Avoid the hustle and bustle of city life and soak up the scenery on a lakes and mountains holiday. Enjoy walking, cycling, swimming or any type of water-based activity you can think of – a visit to the lakes or mountains can be as hectic or laid-back as you want it to be. Discover beautiful alpine country and glorious shimmering lakes, where the climate is perfect during the summer months.

The French Alps

View of Mont Blanc

Our first stop is the French Alps. Snow-capped peaks, flower-filled meadows and the crystal lakes are year-round attractions for their beauty and access to water sports. This is one of the world’s most spectacular outdoor playgrounds. You’ll find all manner of activities available here, from hiking and climbing to summer skiing.

The French portion of the mountains is also home to some famous resort towns. Annecy is the ‘little Venice of the Alps’, where flower-lined canals flow between the quaint buildings. The town is built on the northern end of Lake Annecy – you’ll also find attractive lakeside beaches.

Other highlights of a visit to the region include riding the cable cars in Grenoble, and Chamonix, the site of the first Winter Olympics. Take a ride in the world’s highest cable car to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi.

The beauty of Switzerland speaks for itself. You’ll find gleaming lakes, icy glaciers, thundering waterfalls and historic spa towns. While active holidaymakers can get stuck into the fabulous climbing, walking, cycling or even summer skiing, those looking for a more relaxing break can explore the picturesque cities and villages, visit museums and simply enjoy the gorgeous Swiss countryside.

Jungfrau Joch railway

There’s so much to see and do, it’s hard to know where to start. Our campsite is set in the attractive spa town of Interlaken – impressive views are part of the package. It makes a superb base for exploring the area – there’s easy access to the unforgettable Jungfrau Railway too. (You can read more about that in this blog post!)

Other must-sees in the area included the 72 waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley (guided hikes available) and St Beatus Caves (a huge system of underground limestone formations and gorges. Around a kilometre is accessible along well-lit pathways).

11th-century Fortress of Hohensalzburg in Saltzburg

For breath taking, picture-postcard beauty, it’s hard to beat Austria. The country really does have everything – majestic mountains, pretty villages, sparkling lakes and delicious food. And while it’s renowned for winter sports, Austria is equally as wonderful a destination during summer months.

There are countless opportunities for walking, cycling and hiking against a backdrop of stunning scenery. Our campsite, Bella Austria, is based in the Styria province and is set amongst stunning Austrian countryside.

There’s plenty to see and do here too. Explore the picturesque delights of Graz, or head to Saltzburg. The 11th-century Fortress of Hohensalzburg, is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval castles. The ‘Enchanted Forest of Styria’ is sure to be a hit with fairy-tale loving children of all ages. This charming theme park, set in an enchanted forest is home to many of the characters from the Brothers Grimm stories

Canvas Holidays offer a choice of campsites in the French Alps, Switzerland and Austria.
