A night at the museum…

No, this isn’t a blog post about a Ben Stiller film. Much as I’d like to spend time reviewing it, this post is actually to tell you about something rather good that’s happening this weekend.

Free entry to loads of different museums, all over Europe. At night. Oh, and did I mention it’s free?

Basically, on Saturday 16 May 2015, museums all over Europe will throw open their doors after usual closing hours and invite the public to come and explore. Some are ‘roam free’, while others hold special events or talks.

There are thousands to choose from. If you’re on holiday this weekend, the website has useful links to what’s on where.

We’ve picked 5 close to Canvas campsites.

#1 Musée d’Orsay, Paris

Set inside an old train station, the building alone is worth the visit. You get free entrance to one of the exhibitions – last entrance is at 11pm.

Collioure – home to many art galleries

#2 Musée d’Art Moderne, Collioure

Close to the sites at Argelès-sur-Mer, this modern art museum is worth a visit pre or post dinner. The town is famed for art galleries and provided inspiration for artists like Picasso and Matisse.

#3 Musée National de Sport, Nice

There are several different events going on at the National Museum of Sport – try your hand at giant table football for example! There’s even a quiz to complete as you take your tour, with prizes to be won.

An interesting insight into the First World War

#4 Historial de la Grande Guerre, Péronne

The official museum of the First World War offers a good narrative from the different nations involved. Go on a journey through the war, with fascinating displays of soldier’s uniforms and vital equipment.

#5 Bayeux Tapestry, Bayeux

If you’re in the area, a visit here is a must (my own infamous comment on a visit here when I was 7 – “But mum, it’s got holes in it…”) Holes aside, the tapestry is well worth a visit, and will be accompanied by people dressed in costumes to really bring the experience to life.

This is just a quick snap shot of what’s available – let us know what gems you’ve discovered in the comments below.
